Updating firmware on the Huawei B315s router

This page gives you step-by-step instructions on how to update your Huawei B315s modem's firmware.

Important things to know

  • It will take about 15 mins to update your software. While you’re doing this your broadband service will be impacted. If you have a phone connected to your modem, it will also be affected.
  • Around 60MB of data is used to update your modem.
  • When you update your modem, your Wi-Fi password may need to be changed and any customised or advanced configuration will be removed. Feel free to contact the Lightwire Helpdesk at 0800 12 13 14 if you need assistance with setting this up again.
  • Improved speed is dependent on cell sites in your area being upgraded by our network partner

To update using a desktop or laptop computer

Make sure that your computer is connected to your modem using either Wi-Fi, or an Ethernet cable

  1. Open up your web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, etc) and access the modem's user interface by visiting the address http://192.168.5.254. A notification that an update is available should appear. Click Update
    • If the notification doesn't appear, simply click Log in at the top of the screen
  2. Log in as the admin user. The default username and password are both the word 'admin'. If you have changed this in the past, please use the password that you had originally set
    • If you're unable to log in due to having the incorrect password, please call our Helpdesk team at 0800 12 13 14, as we may need to talk you through resetting the modem and configuring it to work with Lightwire again.
  3. You may see a prompt to update your password. Please click Later
  4. If the Update screen doesn't automatically appear, click the Update tab at the top of the screen
  5. Click the Update Now button to start the upgrade process
  6. The software will begin downloading, and then installing to your modem. Please ensure that the modem is not turned off or reset during this process.
  7. Once complete, you'll see a notification that the update has been completed
  8. You'll be given the opportunity to review the settings and then finalise the process.

To update using an iPhone or iPad

  1. Make sure that your iPhone or iPad is connected to the modem by Wi-Fi
  2. Download and install the HUAWEI HiLink (Mobile WiFi) app from the App store (available here: https://itunes.apple.com/am/app/huawei-hilink-mobile-wifi/id546979875?mt=8
  3. Open the HUAWEI HiLink app
  4. The app will prompt you for the login details for your device
  5. Login - the default username and password are both "admin". If you have changed this in the past, please use the password you have set.
  6. You will see a notification that an update is available. Click Update
  7. The software will start downloading to your modem
  8. Once it has downloaded, the modem will start updating itself
  9. Your modem will shut off the Wi-Fi connection for a time as part of this process. Once it's available again you'll need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi.

To update using an Android smartphone or tablet

  1. Make sure that your smartphone or tablet is connected to the modem by Wi-Fi
  2. Download and install the HUAWEI HiLink (Mobile WiFi) app from the Play Store (available here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.huawei.mw&hl=enhttps://itunes.apple.com/am/app/huawei-hilink-mobile-wifi/id546979875?mt=8
  3. Open the HUAWEI HiLink app
